Interviews
Preparation
Employer Knowledge
Increase your knowledge of the company. Read company reports and literature; if the company has floated, see how they are doing on the stock exchange. UK company reports can be found at www.carol.co.uk.
Job Knowledge
Obtain a job description. If one is not automatically sent, ring and ask for one (failing that, ask for further details over the telephone). Match your skills and experience to each 'requirement' and prepare one or two examples of your skills/experience and how they were used in a particular situation.
Self Knowledge
Look at ways in which you can demonstrate how your achievements and experience have lead to the kind of job and employer you have approached, and be prepared to expand upon the examples and evidence of skills outlined in your application. Think of one or two further examples to use during the interview.
Planning
- Decide what you are going to wear. Is it suitable? Will it give the right impression? Is it comfortable?
- Find out how to get to the interview. Check travel arrangements and exactly where the interview will take place.
- Prepare a response for the inevitable - "Is there anything you would like to ask us?" - make a list of questions.
- Consider answers to questions on meeting the criteria for the job.
- It is possible you will be asked to give a presentation on a chosen topic.
On the day
- Take with you a copy of the job description, your letter of application and CV.
- Arrive on time and suitably dressed. You can afford to show some individuality, but dress smartly.
- Remember that you are there because they are interested in you.
