Look at Prospects industry insights -
Charity and Voluntry Work which explains the work and job roles as well as providing an overview of the whole sector. The 'Working Abroad' leaflet (hard copies available from Careers) also contains useful information and links.
Prospects website also has an ‘explore types of job’ section which includes job profiles of over 800 occupations. Information for each job covers salary and conditions, entry requirements, training and career development, typical employers/vacancy sources, related jobs and case studies, contacts and resources.

Further Training and Development
Most of the professional bodies run courses to support continuing professional development.Check their websites from the list above.
www.prospects.ac.uk has a searchable database of postgraduate courses.
www.ica-uk.org.uk offer one year voluntary placements with development organizations worldwide.
www.wse.org.uk run an eight week course sent by email giving you the tools and resources to get into the development sector.
www.cardaid.co.uk/development run a four week training course for people considering working in overseas development, included visits to charities working overseas.
VSO offer a Youth for Development programme for young people between 18 and 25, working overseas for a year in a placement relevant to their course of study. Look at their website for further information www.vso.org.uk.
The Civil Service has a fast track scheme for postgraduates with at least a year's work experience in development. Training can last up to five years and takes place in both the UK and overseas www.fastream.gov.uk.
